DePuy Orthopedics in August 2010 announced a recall of certain hip implant systems and "ASR" surfacing for hip implants. Serious health problems and symptoms including, but not limited to, pain and increased levels of certain metals in the blood can be associated with defective hip implants and surfacing systems. Kerwin B. Stone was born in Stephenville, Texas, and graduated from Southern Methodist University with a B.S. Degree in 1969 and an M.S. Degree in 1970, both in Mathematics. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force from 1970 through 1975, which included a tour of duty in Southeast Asia. Kerwin received his J.D. Degree in 1977 from the University of Texas, and has been practicing law in Beaumont since 1978.

Kerwin was trained as a mediator by the American Arbitration Association, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Mediation Center of Jefferson County, Inc.
